Last week we put the latest version of Aesop Story Engine (1.3) into a public beta. The results have been great, we’ve tweaked a few things, and are happy to announce that 1.3 is now available!

Usability wise, the biggest improvement by far is the new Map component. It’s been completely re-built with some really slick features. You can now add markers by clicking on a map in the post. If you zoom or drag the view around, that will all be saved and reflected on your map.

Feature wise, we’re introducing a brand new map mode called “Sticky Maps.” Enabling this feature will apply a small map fixed to the top, bottom, left, or right side of your screen. And, when you scroll, the map will follow you and stop at the points you determine. Learn how.

We’ve also introduced a new filter that allows you to swap the map tiles per post. This enables the ability for some truly stunning map designs like the one shown above, while at the same time keeping the same map tiles for the other posts. Or, you can switch out the provider across the board.

Also in 1.3 is a brand new color scheme for the main story component generator. We opted to move to a lighter color scheme to better match the design patterns emerging in WordPress.

Clone-able Components

Simply click the new “clone” button on the placeholder in the post editor, and the component will be cloned, settings and all.

About Backwards Compatibility

With this update you’ll notice an alert at the top of your admin area. It will ask you to “upgrade” your map makers, and when you click this button, it will automatically map any old markers, zoom levels, and starting coordinates over to the new system automagically.

We’ve tested this upgrade process multiple times, and didn’t have any issues reported during the beta. This update process will only be offered if you have existing map markers on a post or page. Aside from that, we are REALLY excited about this release!! The usability improvements to the Map component really mold Aesop Story Engine into a stable, user-friendly, longform story building machine.
