ParticipantMy grid gallery displays badly – differently every time: Sometimes as a vertical line to the left, sometimes as a grid (as it is supposed to) but only the first three of the four columns and with space between the photos in each column. Scrolling and refreshing the page corrects the fault.
In both Safari and Firefox. How can I improve this?July 19, 2014 at 12:53 am #3023Jenny @ Aesop
KeymasterHi Joakim.
I am unable to replicate this issue on my test site. Will you please visit this page, scroll down to the gallery, and let me know if you are seeing the issue on my test site? https://aesop.simplemama.com/whispering-willows/
A link to your site would also be very helpful to me. Thanks!

ParticipantI have installed a free gallery plugin that works. The gallery in Kerouac does not work for some strange reason…
I am not quite sure what it is I am paying for…July 29, 2014 at 6:15 pm #3179Jenny @ Aesop
KeymasterHi Joakim. As I stated in your other post, I believe you have some sort of CSS conflict going on with another plugin. I have asked for a link to your site in another post so hopefully you can get that to me so I can take a look.
Edit: To view a gallery on my test site using Kerouac, please visit https://aesop.simplemama.com/testing-timeline-component/

KeymasterHi Joakim. My test site was switched over to the Novella theme for testing but it’s back on Kerouac now. 🙂
I checked out all of the posts and pages on your site and I couldn’t find a gallery. Can you point me to the proper post?
Also, I wanted to mention that you’ve done a great job with your site! The colors are excellent and coordinate beautifully.

ParticipantHi Jenny,
The gallery works since I installed a plugin gallery, https://venturepress.dk/faces_of_ethiopia/
But I still have problems with the responsiveness (or lack of).
On my iPhone and on iPads, the texts display badly – I think I explained it in another thread…
Wkr. JoakimAugust 4, 2014 at 12:11 pm #3326Jenny @ Aesop
KeymasterYou shouldn’t need to use a plugin for the gallery, but if you’re satisfied with the outcome, then I guess that’s okay. 🙂
Regarding the responsiveness and styling on mobile devices, let’s continue that conversation at https://aesopstoryengine.com/topic/responsiveness-not-on-iphone/
Also, if this topic can be closed now, please let me know.

ParticipantBut it WAS necessary to use a plugin… for it never displayed properly.
Never mind – a plugin solved the problem.August 4, 2014 at 1:42 pm #3339Jenny @ Aesop
KeymasterHi Joakim, like I said before, I think you have a plugin conflict which is altering how things are displaying (or not displaying). I would be happy to take a look at the backend of your website at any time. If you’re interested, simply create me an administrative login and email it to jenny@aesopinteractive.com
I definitely don’t want you settling for using a third party plugin – the Aesop galleries do work great! We just have to figure out why they aren’t displaying on your site.
August 6, 2014 at 12:37 am #3357Joakim Larsen
ParticipantI don’t know what I am doing wrong.
I follow your instructions in the help page – but the gallery displayed completely wrongly. Only two of the many pictures are included – but in return the logo, which I never asked to be included shows three times.
I have switched all the plugins off – just in case – but still it doesn’t work.
I have sent you a screenshot on email to https://aesopstoryengine.com/topic/gallery-improving-the-show/

ParticipantHi Jenny,
I have turned off all the plugins.
Have restarted Safari and I managed to remove all the logo pictures and have now added again again the pictures.
The gallery displayes very differently than the examples you make in your posts, no matter what type I choose, thumbnail, sequence, grid, etc.
I cannot change that and I cannot do anything to improve the way it shows. I have sent you a couple of screen shotsFurthermore when you click the picture it opens in a light box only.
I don’t see any possibility to change that in the very limited way to change the gallery settings.Furthermore quotes still don’t show properly (I cannot centre them properly).
And I cannot change the colour of the menu points when you click them, they turn orange by default.I am spending way too much time on this and think it should be a lot simpler – just as it is in WP directly.
Regards
JoakimAugust 6, 2014 at 5:09 am #3361Joakim Larsen
ParticipantWhichever way I try the gallery dent display properly.
I have just tried again three times.I am not completely new to WP and have no problems outside this theme.
Now I have added you as a administrator so you can take a look and let me know what is wrong.I am getting SO fed up wasting my time on this.
And I am beginning to feel that the 120 US are wasted.Wkr

KeymasterHi Joakim. Thanks for your replies, the screenshots you sent, as well as the login information for your website.
***This reply is regarding the galleries only***
After looking everything over, it looks like you’re creating WordPress galleries incorrectly. I’m not sure how you’re doing it exactly, but here are the steps on how to create a WordPress gallery the correct way. I’ve also made a video for your convenience which you may view at https://screencast.com/t/XsoCQOtGE
- Visit WPadmin → Galleries → New Gallery
- Click the
Add Media
button- Click the
Create Gallery
option- Insert gallery into editor, and publish.
- Upload new images or select multiple images from the Media Libary tab then click
Create a new gallery
- Choose a
Type
from the dropdown box then clickInsert gallery
- Give the gallery post a title then click
Publish
Next, you can copy the Aesop gallery shortcode from within the post (listed under
Gallery Instructions
beneath thePublish
button) or from WPadmin → Galleries. Paste the Aesop gallery shortcode into the post you want to display the gallery and publish the post.On your site, I’ve edited your draft post titled “Gallery” and have made titles for everything so you can see how each type looks. Please look over your “Gallery” post when you get a moment.

Keymaster***This reply is regarding the quotes only***
Regarding the quote issues, I looked at the two published posts on your site and I don’t see anywhere that the Aesop Quote component is being used. I do see that you have some text that you have included in quotation marks, such as:
“Mengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was trouble. But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is dangerous.
The HTML for that section is:
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>"Mengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was trouble. But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is dangerous.</strong></em></p>
The reason the text is wrapping and including only 1 word on another line is because of your content width. If you want things to be cohesive and flow better, I would recommend using the actual Aesop Quote component or changing the layout. Right now, you have the sentence starting with “But the president” on a new line (this is why it’s wrapping). I would recommend backspacing to have that sentence start immediately after “was trouble”, like:
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>"Mengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was trouble. But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is dangerous.</strong></em></p>
If you wish to break mid-line, just add
<br />
HTML tags where the new line(s) should start.August 6, 2014 at 2:03 pm #3371Joakim Larsen
ParticipantHGi Jenny,
Thank you very much for the samples.
They are a bog help – I can build on them and finally to continue.I am sure I have tried creating the galleries as you explained in the help forum.
Maybe you should check out the help forum and the way setting up a gallery is explained.I lost my patience with the quotes and have given up using that function.
The quotes I have entered in the Today is Today story are put in manually.
In the future I will continue that – no big deal. Thanks again for your sample galleries.
Much appreciated.I will look at the other answers you have sent me when I get time – probably tomorrow.
With kind regards

Keymaster***This reply is regarding the menu text color (on hover) only***
To alter the appearance of the menu hover text with CSS, you can use something like:
#header .kerouac-header-right ul li a:hover { color: #000000; }
I recommend using a plugin like Simple Custom CSS to save your CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/).
If you’re not familiar with how to use CSS inspector in Chrome, it’s super easy to use and will make finding the css classes that you’ll need when you want to change the design. Here’s a great in-depth article about this: https://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/developertools/part1/
Hope this helps!

KeymasterYou are very welcome! I made a couple videos and took screenshots while working on the galleries on your site. I plan on adding these to our help docs in the future to make things easier for the next person. 🙂

ParticipantExcellent – I am looking forward to seeing them.
For I didn’t understand the difference between what I did and the description you sent me.
So please do let me know where the videos will be displayed.Regarding the quotes – I will look at it soon.

ParticipantAll the CSS information above – I am sorry, but I don’t have the time to read and understand all that.
Regarding the gallery; I finally got the gallery working.
And I now understand that you first create the gallery in Gallery in the main menu.
And from there you copy paste the gallery code into your page or post.
You do not create the gallery by clicking Add Media from the post or page where you want it.
Suddenly very simple! Why isnøt that written on the Help page?I also have decided to completely drop using the media player, for the following reasons:
first of all the music “jumps” when you click on to the next photo in the slideshow –
that is right until you discover to click outside the player. Very impractical for visitors… how would they know?
Secondly the music displayes in a white box (yet another) if you add it through the Kerouac tool box. It takes up too much space, and if you decide to add more than one file, each file is displayed… in each their white box… with a margin.
You can add it by clicking Add Media, but here you have the same problem with the music jumping when clicking the slideshow.Wkr

ParticipantHi Jenny,
I am sorry too – as you well know I paid 120 US dollars for this theme.
And I am sorry to say this, but so far it has been a big disappointment and a waste of my time.I presume you received the photos of my phone.
I expect some kind of solution to the lack of responsiveness.
For with no theme… not least a story telling theme would you expect the line length to be 80% of a screen size.
No-one reads that long lines on a screen. 11 centimetres is the optimal line length for screen reading.
And this is ESPECIALLY so when it is a story telling theme, where you may be writing long texts.
That is at least what I was planning to use it for.Furthermore the top photos (they are called… the featured photo (?) )
only show about 1/3 so they too are not responsive to the screen size.
And the map photo in in the Today is Today post shows in ridiculously small size (set to same margin as the text)
The larger photos further down the post with the grey text boxes inside also don’t not show properly on the smartphone. When the phone is in portrait only a third of the picture is visible. For it is not responsive.
And here the grey text box takes up more than 30% of the picture.
In landscape – which is how I would normally view a web site, the grey text box takes up the entire picture.
I can send you pictures of that too, if you want. There are too many problems.
And I am running out of time.
I return to Africa very soon so I have to get my web site up and running now.
For once I am there the bandwidth is too small to work on such things – only good for uploading.
Please let me know what you intend to do for I am not happy and this it is not what I paid for. With kind regards

ParticipantHi Nick and Jenny,
Today I saw the web site on another iPhone, 4S (mine is 5S) and the Today is Today story displays just as badly on that:
you only see around 25% of the featured photo on the top
the text took up less than 30% (even though the line length is 50%),
the gallery displayed badly – full page gallery didn’t display full page.
Instead the header still showed and the gallery photo took up around 35-40% of the screen. This is not what I call responsiveness and I donut have this problem with my other WP blog.
The quote doesn’t work properly (will not centre)
The gallery doesn’t show full page on iPhone
Media player works badly and jumps when you use arrow keys (see my last post)
You cannot change the header link colour when clicking on it unless you go into the CSS system.
But most importantly: the line length has to be 80% (much too long for reading online) before the web site shows properly online.I am not satisfied and I am sorry to say that I have no more time to spend on this.
I have decided to not use the theme – and when I do that I expect my money back.
Please confirm.With kind regards

KeymasterHi Joakim.
I responded to one of your other posts regarding the mobile view. I’ve included a fix there that will solve all of your mobile issues.
Using the same plugin I recommended on your other post, use the following CSS code to make the featured image span the width of the mobile site:
#primary .kerouac-entry-top-img.kerouac-bg-img { background-size: contain !important; background-repeat: no-repeat !important; }
Regarding the map photo, once you add the CSS code I provided on the other post, it will remove the same padding as the text. If you want the map larger (like full width), then insert an image component using 100% width (http://aesopstoryengine.com/help/image-component/).
For the larger photos with the grey boxes, you can try using:
#primary .os-ios .aesop-stacked-img { background-size: contain; }
Please realize that no mobile website will ever look the same as the desktop version. In fact, many companies have a completely different mobile version. If you’re trying to get your mobile and desktop sites to match as much as possible, I would recommend reading that article I supplied in the other thread. This will teach you how to use the Chrome inspector to change these things using CSS (as I’ve provided you examples). I can’t design your site for you but I can help point you in the right direction and provide you with tools to help you succeed.
It is understandable that the portrait and landscape versions do not display similarly. Oftentimes sizes of images, text, etc, use padding and margins to keep the components responsive. If these attributes are removed, you’ll lose the responsiveness. You will need to decide if it’s more important for you to have a responsive mobile site, or if you want the desktop and mobile sites to look exact alike (which is nearly impossible).
Please also be aware of our refund policy for digital goods located at https://aesopstoryengine.com/product-policy/.

ParticipantHi Jenny.
This is not longer fun.
And of course I know that things look differently on different devices. I am not that ignorant.
But I expect different functions in the theme to work.
That I think is not unreasonable to expect.
But so many functions don’t.
And I think the discussions in the threads show that very clearly. If you expect me to be programming in a theme that I have paid a relatively high pricce for
and 120 US is a relatively high price for what I get…
and you expect me to do it because the simple functions do not work…
then I am afraid you have the wrong customer in your shop.I don’t want to pay for this. And I believe that the conditions for refunding are met.
So I would like to have my money back.
Please confirm.With kind regards

KeymasterHey Joakim!
It looks like we’ve worked A LOT with you to customize your site, on several different occasions (http://aesopstoryengine.com/topic/responsiveness-not-on-iphone/). We’ve gone above and beyond by providing you with support, even going so far as to provide you with CSS to suit your specific needs (something that I do not condone). Our themes do a great job of supporting styling within the components in Aesop Story Engine, but in the end we cannot be responsible for customizations as a the result of your content. It’s tough building themes for the masses, and sometimes, custom css is required to achieve the desired results, which we’ve provided on a few occasions here.
The theme in question, works exactly as it was designed. A lot of your complaints above have to do with the design, which is entirely subjective, and very easily fixed with custom css. This theme was designed by a professional designer, and every instance from mobile to desktop was taken into consideration. We cannot give a refund for something that is working, and especially not on something that we’ve spent so much time helping you with.
Furthermore, your purchase was made beyond 30 days ago, and our refund policy clearly states that refunds will not be offered past 30 days.
We’re happy to help you further if you have any issues within the theme itself.

ParticipantFUNCTIONAL COMPLAINTS
Quotes not centering
Media player jumping when using arrows on the gallery
Lack of responsiveness of gallery in full screen on iphone
Lack of responsiveness in relation to gallery full screen on iphone
Lack of responsiveness in relation to featured picture
Lack of responsiveness in relation to paralax gallery
Lack of responsiveness in relation to text following paralax gallery photos
Lack of reponsiveness with line length other than the 25-30 cm (optimal length 11 cm)
Drop down menu not working
Having to do programming to change colour of clicked links
Tag-line not showing together with the company name in the top left corner – a perfectly resonable request.
Not being able to remove the footer name and tagline
Not being able to remove the footer menu – only change itSo Jenny and Nick, can you hounestly say that these are unresonable complaints?
And would you be happy having paid 120 dollars for something that clearly doent work properly?
And also tell me what you would do in my place… please.REGARDING REFUNDING
First of all, it was not more than 30 days. But 30 days on the spot!
Secondly the complaints above have nothing to do with design – as you should understand. In relation to design, then I have many comments. For the design is terrible and unflexible – unless of course you know programming. The boxes, the extra lines, the red boxes that appear out of nowhere, the orange links, the boxed header, the default font etc. That is the design.
Secondly, to the customer it doesn’t matter how much time you spent, that just shows the problems doesn’t it? And they are not solved.
Thirdly I really don’t care who produced it – but maybe you should change to someone who can.
Fourthly it is completely wrong to sell a storytelling theme – where you cannot set the line length to opitimal reading-on-screen line length unless you know about CSS and programming.
Rest assured that I am NOT happy, that I will NOT be able to recommend your product. On the contrary, I can only warn others against buying it. And at that price… !!!
For as I see it, you are selling an unfinished product – one that does not live up to the simple expectations and completely resonable expectations of a normal customer. In fact I think it is bordering a trap – for NO-ONE will want to pay 120 dollars for this.So again, please explain to me:
can you hounestly say that these are unresonable complaints,
and would you be happy having paid 120 dollars for this?
And finally please let me know what you would do in my place…August 13, 2014 at 10:51 am #3518Hyun Supul
KeymasterWe’re a very small, and new startup that’s only 8 months old. I myself, work for free so we can afford to have amazing support people like Jenny spend three days helping you with customizing your site. At this point I truly feel that you’re taking advantage of our time. We’re going to process your request for a refund. Once processed you will not have access to this support forum, or further updates for this theme. The refund will be processed within 30 days.
Thanks,
Nick -
