How can I switch the themes language to German? I want “geschrieben von” instead of “written by” and “Autoren” instead of “Writers” and “Fotografien” instead of “Photography” etc.

Good question. If you installed WordPress in English, which would be my guess, the easiest way to switch to German would be to add this to your wp-config.php file:
Follow the instructions here for installing the .mo and .po files needed: https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-in-other-languages
If needed, you could do a fresh install of WordPress and choose German as your language.
Let me know how you go about.November 21, 2014 at 1:17 pm #5459
No, WP is completly installed in German. Just the Theme is in english.

We’re checking into this to see what the cause might be. The theme should be in German.November 21, 2014 at 4:40 pm #5462
Expect an update coming soon to a WordPress dashboard near you for Jorgen that fixes these German string issues.
Thanks for your patience and sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.November 24, 2014 at 7:56 pm #5520Jenny @ AesopKeymaster
Hi Andreas. You’re also welcome to join the German translation project for Aesop at https://poeditor.com/join/project?hash=6fa1cba7f7cf990178dcc32a2498b18bDecember 22, 2014 at 9:11 am #6089
Any news on this issue? I might join the translation team soon. Been on vacation for two weeks.
AndreasDecember 22, 2014 at 11:51 am #6099
The newest version of Jorgen should have the German translations included.
Just so you know, the translation portal mentioned above is only for the free Aesop Story Engine plugin, not Jorgen. We’d love to have your help though.
All the best!December 22, 2014 at 5:32 pm #6111Nina WeißParticipant
I can confirm problems with the translations with the newest 1.4 aesop-core and the Jorgen-1.3 theme.
There see to be different problems in effect here.
The first is with aesop-core: Renaming /languages/aesop-core-DE_de.mo to aesop-core-de_DE.mo fixes the issue and makes the german translation work for the core plugin again (see this pull request for details)
For Jorgen however, something else seems to be going on. All .po files in Jorgen’s language directory are declared as “Language: en_US\n”, but I don’t know if that’s the culprit.
Trying to change that and export a .mo file via POEdit leads to a “duplicate definition” error. There are 2 lines for the translation of “Written by” being highlighted. That error prevents the .mo file from being generated.
Hope this helps a bit tracking down what’s going on,

Where do I find updates for the themes (I have Jorgen). Where to download them from?
AndreasDecember 29, 2014 at 12:25 pm #6203
It looks like you were able to update to the most recent version of Jorgen.
Cheers on your day!January 28, 2015 at 5:08 am #6746Andreas SimmetParticipant
I bought and downloaded the theme jorgen on 15th January. WordPress itself is set to ‘German’ but jorgen still shows ‘Written by’ 🙂
What can I do?
Thanks and Regards

There should be an update coming to fix this.September 3, 2015 at 8:16 am #10009
I run Aesop 1.6.4 on WordPress 4.3 with Jorgen 1.3.2
The items WRITERS, PHOTOGRAPHY, ILLUSTRATION in storyfooter do still not appear in jorgen-de_DE. I already created an account at https://poeditor.com/
As soon as it is activated, I would volunteer to post the translations and hope you could include them in a future update?September 3, 2015 at 12:30 pm #10010
Hey there fupushdev,
Those bottom three storyfooter strings were not added to the .po file, so they simply need to be added.
I have added those strings into jorgen-de_DE.po.
#: ../partials/storyfooter.php:6 msgid "Writers" msgstr "" #: ../partials/storyfooter.php:22 msgid "Photography" msgstr "" #: ../partials/storyfooter.php:38 msgid "Illustration" msgstr ""
Can you add the appropriate translations and then send them back to me here?September 8, 2015 at 3:22 am #10037
here are the translations.
As writers is plural, i chose the german “Autoren”, which is also plural.
msgstr “Illustration”September 8, 2015 at 3:28 am #10038
I found two other missing translations:
One is “Written by”, which is weird, because there exists
#: ../content-indexstory.php:10 ../content-single.php:35
msgid “Written by:”
msgstr “Geschrieben von:”
Another is the word “by” in ../content-single.php:48
which should translate to “von”

Thank’s for your help, Hyun. We have have child-theme running, tho, which we’ve modified quite a bit, so I guess we’d need a change log.March 22, 2017 at 1:32 pm #14797
Would you like to send me your child theme zipped? If so, I can test to see if it works before making a new release. You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.March 22, 2017 at 1:45 pm #14798
That sounds great, thanks. I don’t have access to it right now, but I’ll send it to you tomorrow.March 23, 2017 at 7:26 pm #14815
