As Michael stated above, we are very much around. We’ve been moving from TX to NC and for the next week things will be crazy, but only on my end. Michael above is holding down the fort. The forum may seem dead because our themes are just so awesome that we actually get very little support requests.

If you need assistance with Aesop Story Engine, we also watch that support forum daily as well. https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/aesop-story-engine

I am the only full time developer for Aesopinteractive. We’re a very small business, and these days I am spread pretty thin. This isn’t a quick bug fix, and actually requires a complete rewrite of the plugin. We’re happy to give you a refund, as I do not have an ETA on when this will get fixed.

I see that we’re pulling all posts to check for old map markers on an upgrade routine, and these queries take a maximum of one second in your screenshot, but definitely not 15 seconds.

One thing we can immediately try is eliminating those queries since you likely are not upgrading map markers from an older install of Aesop Story Engine.

At any rate, we can change line 428 of aesop-story-engine/admin/includes/components/component-map.php, the posts_per_page to 0, from -1. So currently it says:

    $posts = get_posts( array( ‘post_type’ => array( ‘page’, ‘post’ ), ‘posts_per_page’ => -1 ) );

and we’re going to change to:

    $posts = get_posts( array( ‘post_type’ => array( ‘page’, ‘post’ ), ‘posts_per_page’ => 0 ) );

I’m also happy to make these changes for you as well if you’d like to send login.

    Hey Jonathan,
First, that’s a really awesome example of Aesop Story Engine in action! Is this your first time using it? You guys have done a really great job with that!!

Onto business, I was able to see it both working and not working:
    http://cl.ly/image/14402u0k2v2m

I think what’s happening, is that its calculating the length before the images have had time to load. What I need to do is change this so that the calculations happen after images are fully loaded. We’ll make that update this week, as we have a few other fixes that will be going out as well.

    Hey Jason,
Unfortunately without being able to replicate it, there’s not much we can do. Since this hasn’t been reported, it’s means it’s a localized issue. I just tested in Firefox, and have no issues adding, or updating components. Here’s a screencast:

    http://cl.ly/2b0h3R3j021x

I would suggest clearing your cache, and removing any browser extensions like ad blocker and the like. If that doesnt work, try deactivating all the plugins, to see if the issue persists.

OK hrm. I just tried editing the quote in the backend and after updating it doesn’t sent to the top like you describe. We’ve had this report come up once before but within Firefox, never in Chrome. We’ll keep looking, but I’m unable to replicate right away. Tiny MCE (the technology we’re having to operate within in WordPress admin) is pretty restricting, and super challenging when these types of things come up.

Is the behavior replicable? If so, what steps are you taking to cause it to do that?

There’s a bug that sometimes prevents the javascript from firing, thus the parallax component is unable to properly calculate a height based on the height of the image. The parallax components functionality works. We both spent some time on your site yesterday in all browsers.

A bug has been logged with Aesop Story Engine and this will be fixed this week, with an update this weekend.

In the mean time, you can use the CSS snippet supplied above as a band-aid.

No worries, no hassle at all! If you’re curious, Mapbox changed their API routes, so we had to make an upgrade process so that everything worked for you. However, it seems sometimes the update process doesn’t trigger correctly, so I’ve just made an adjustment to the update script so that this shouldn’t happen for others, or in the future.

Is your version of Aesop Story Engine and Aesop Lazy Loader up to date? ASE is 1.5 and Lazy Loader is on 1.1.1. And no the plugin will not conflict with W3 Total Cache in any way at all. The lazy loader plugin is merely calling jQuery Unveil, and nothing more.

What’s happening is that you’re trying to use a v4 map on a v3 mapbox API.

    1. Put back the Aesop mapbox ID — aesopinteractive.hkoag9o3
    2. Save settings refresh, and visit WordPress admin
    3. It will prompt you to upgrade your maps

Once upgraded you won’t have any issues.

You have to go through the above steps or else you’re going to continue to have issues.

There’s no reason to reset your database. Aesop Story Engine 1.5 looks to see if you have the default Aesop Story Engine mapbox id inserted. If you do, it upgrades the entire map system. If it doesn’t it doesn’t do anything. This is like this so we don’t overwrite your custom maps and break your site.

What’s happening is that you’re trying to use a v4 map on a v3 mapbox API.

It’s abnormal for your media library to be pulling in high-res images, it’s supposed to pull in the thumbnail sized versions. That’s the way that WordPress works. I tried to regenerate thumbnails, and it didn’t work. This is leading me to believe that there’s a permission issue on your host that’s preventing WordPress from uploading the resized images, OR, your host isn’t configured correctly and/or are missing some required libraries that WordPress uses to resize images. All of those images in the media library are taking a long time to load because they’re’ 3000px wide.

This is definitely a hosting configuration or permission issue.

    I would make sure that:
    – there are no permission issues within your uploads directory
    – make sure your host has the appropriate php libs that WordPress needs to resize images

Unfortunately until that issue is fixed we won’t be of much help. You’re the only one that has reported this issue so it’s definitely isolated.

    I hope this all helps!!!

I see what’s happening now. The problem is that it’s looking for the auto-generated thumbnail version of the image, which for some reason, in your library, isn’t there. Do you have any modifications that are preventing the default WordPress thumbnails from being generated? Check out this screen shot, yours is on the right, and mine is on the left. Notice the appending of the 300×200 size by WordPress. https://cl.ly/image/3N1H2P1c2L0q

What you can try to do is install a plugin called Regenerate Thumbnails. This will go through and make the appropriate sized thumbnail for each of your images in your media library. Let us know how you go about after doing this.

There’s something not correct about your mapbox id. Are you saving the mapbox and publishing it in mapbox? When I plug your mapbox id into my local install, it does the same thing, but works with other id’s. This means this is related to your mapbox id.

    Nick Haskins

    Hi Anna!
So I’m not so sure that what you’re asking for is possible due to the way the Parallax and Chapter components are written.

Let’s take the Parallax component for example. You could absolutely set the CSS property to background-size:contain. This would cause the image that’s set as the background image to always respect the width of the photo. However, the parallax shifting then doesn’t work and you end up with clipping on the top and bottom. This is why the background image is set to “cover”. However, I certainly wouldn’t call it “useless” as there are countless thousands of users who utilize Aesop Story Engine.

We’re always looking to improve things within Aesop Story Engine, and this being one of them. We’re hoping to have better cropping predictability on the next major release, as this would be a new feature.

The Chapter component’s background image is special. It too is set as background-size cover. The way this works, is that it will always match the width and height of the browser, so the image will always be crop centered. There’s unfortunately no way around this since we’re matching the background image to the height and width of the browser window.

I hope this helps clear things up, and again we hope to have new image cropping features in the next major release.

There isn’t a direct way to control the aesop add component button through CMB2 but you can hide it with css is the best suggestion I have there. I’m not sure the filters that we have for that button would work in that application.

Can you clarify a bit more on #2? The components are shortcodes so if you’re saving field data in a wysiwyg field just echo out the var like so echo do_shortcode($var). That is if I understood your query correctly.

    Hi Anna-Sofia,
We apologize for the delay in this, but I’m happy to report that we’ve just released Jorgen 1.2 which addresses this issue. I do not see any issues on my iPad Mini running the latest version of iOS, but I did spot an issue with the article cover on mobile. Hey Mark,
Thanks for the feedback. I’m not so sure storing all of the attributes in post meta would have any advantages over it’s current implementation, other than the fact that it would then technically be consuming more resources. the post meta table isn’t exactly the most friendly when it comes to large scale applications.

I’ve come across the need once, to access an attributes value from a shortcode, and one of our devs got around it with a regex in TinyMCE.

Regarding a div…a client can break their site with a missing <. You can"t break your site with a mal-formed shortcode. All of this, would be a complete rewrite. We'd also loose the API of the Shortcode that we're utilizing. We'd also loose the has_shortcode function which we rely on a lot. I realize this could be mimicked with individual rejex patterns, but I can't help but think of that old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." With that aside, we're already looking ahead towards the next big version of Aesop, and we've mostly got our minds made up of leaving TinyMCE because of how limiting the environment is. This, is when we move out of the backend, and into the front of the site. Anyways, thanks again for the feedback! Nick

Thanks for reaching out! We did get your email a few days ago and I did want to make sure someone responded to that. Sometimes direct emails tend to slip through the cracks. At any rate, happy to help! Installing the theme is a snap! Inside your download is an Owners Manual, and inside that are instructions on how to upload the theme. Hey Mark!
Great ideas about the “bookmarking” and organizing of components. Will keep that in mind. Regarding removing options and things, yes, using logic similar to this you can remove any component, and any option by filtering that main array:

    https://github.com/bearded-avenger/aesop-core/issues/157#issuecomment-62140437

    2. We recommend using a plugin called Code Snippets to store this type of stuff. Although it can go into a child themes functions.php just as well.

    Does this help?

    Hey Mark,
The overlap stuff was fixed on the last version I believe. If you’re running into this issue can you create a bug report with the exact steps that we can take to replicate the issue? Here’s that bug topic if you’re curious:

    Nick

P.S – If WordPress gave us a way to additionally store them somewhere we’d likely utilize it! But we’d like to stay as close to core as possible. Ya know, one day they may want to buy us out and use some of our tech! 🙂

From the looks of your screenshot it doesn’t look like the gallery is setup correctly. There are some instructions on the right side of the gallery admin, in addition to the Help tab at the top of the page in Screen Options. Additionally, there are instructions here as well:

It may be showing part of the content no matter what’s in the excerpt. I think the best way to hide that would be through some custom css.

    Boris,
I just came across this myself. It’s pretty edge case and hard to reproduce unless there’s two components back to back. If you click into text mode you’ll see this   which is a white space. Deleting that fixes the issue for now.

I’ve re-opened the original Github thread on this and you can follow along here:

    Hey Boris,
The components do not insert white spaces. Only one, the content component, will insert a blank space after the component while in the visual editor. This is to ensure that the content escapes itself. I went through and tested each component and none of them add additional space, except for the content component. If you’re finding each component adding space, can you provide a screencast or let us know how to replicate this?

    Hey Boris,
Each component will look different in each theme. Each theme designer is responsible for designing the components. The functionality will remain the same, but the themes will display theme differently. This is what makes Aesop Story Engine so powerful, is that theme designers can do anything they want with them. You can of course customize this with some CSS.

Good question! While you’re in the WordPress admin editor, if you click the “text” tab then you’ll be shown the “code version” of the component. It will look something like this [aesop_chapter].

I checked the site that you linked, and checked the chapter component, and it’s still the old version. I can tell this because the script tag is still in the same location as the old file. Either your site is cached, or the file didnt get replaced for some reason. All I can tell you is that I’m still seeing the old code.

    Boris,
My apologies. The location of the file is at /public/includes/components/component-heading.php

If you replace the contents of that file with the file that I linked, then it will fix your issue. I was able to produce the code being displayed, then after the fix I made it appears to have fixed it here locally.

I believe I’ve fixed this. You can copy and paste the contents of this file with your chapter-heading.php file located in aesop-story-engine/public/components/component-heading.php

    Hey Mark,
Really apologize for the delay in response here. It’s not normal for us at all, by any means.

Regarding your question, I think I follow, and that’s exactly what we’re doing here. 😉 Its essentially breaking, then re-forming the content div on only the paragraph tag. Since then we’ve got a better method but largely similar.

Sorry for the delay in the response here, that’s not normal at all.

Some of the options in the content component in Novella are not utilized at the discretion of the designer. These are documented in the owners manual.

    Hey Sean!
I’m really sorry that you’ve experienced this delay in support. That’s not typical. Anyways, this error usually occurs when the gallery isn’t setup correctly. There are instructions on the right side of that galleries admin panel, in addition to the “Help” tab up top. Also, there are some docs here that do a step by step on that:

    Hey Jared,
Thanks for reaching out. Judging by your screenshot, something isn’t setup correctly. You shouldn’t have any text fields. If you check console do you get any 404’s on the assets being enqueued? This is what it should look like:

Totally understand. If you copy and paste a component function into a child theme, it will use yours instead of the one in Aesop’s. 🙂 Here’s a bit more info on the developer end of things if you’re interested:

    Hey Robert,
This bug is pretty edge case and not easily replicable. 🙁 I’ve followed your steps above quite a few times and just don’t see that happening on my end. Here’s a quick screencast.

    http://cl.ly/image/2X3W1Y05070c

FWIW I have seen this happen on occasion, and I think it lies somewhere within the script used to resize the text. It only happens when the block style option is used and otherwise doesn’t affect the theme. It doesn’t predictably happen and I’ve spent quite a while on this to no avail. It’s highly possible this was cleared up with the last update of FitText.

If you’re still finding troubles on this with the most recent version of Jorgen (1.0.9), I think what we’ll do next is try another type of script that does something similar, or we’ll make it an option so that you can turn it off all together.

    Hey Todd!
Sorry for the delayed response on this. It’s a bug that’s been squashed in Aesop Story Engine 1.2. We hope to have this out within the next couple of weeks. It happens when two components are used back to back in the editor and one of them is updated.

With the image component, some options are not available. These options were removed in Novella and current version is 1.0.6. It’s also documented in teh owners manual what options are not available. These were are the designers discretion.

Hiya! Sorry to hear you’re having troubles. WordPress provides those controls so it’s easy to set within customizer, however, you can also set them within Settings–>Reading within WordPress admin area. Are you able to set and save it there?
