    Be sure you are using a child theme. Never ever edit core files. Copy page.php to your child theme and edit within the child theme only.

    Hi Elias.

    Be sure you are using the Parallax component to achieve the parallax effect (not the image component). You can read up on this component at https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/parallax-component/

    The parallax effect is most noticed when the image is at the top or the bottom of the page. If you provide a link or a video capture of you slowly scrolling down the page, I can take a look.

    You can’t change the size of a parallax image to be full-size. That defeats the entire purpose of having a parallax effect. If you want a full-size image, use the image component instead (http://aesopstoryengine.com/help/image-component/).

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Sophie.

    The chapter menu bug was fixed in 1.0.2 which was released quite a while ago. The current version is 1.0.5 which was released on 9/18/2014. Be sure you’ve added your Novella license under the WordPress Appearance menu.

    The translation center is located at https://poeditor.com/join/project?hash=6fa1cba7f7cf990178dcc32a2498b18b

    Again, you should make sure you’re using the current version. Translation issues were fixed in the last couple of updates.

    The background image option (not usable) is being removed on the next update. It was an oversight on our part.

    To get the number on the images, use the “sequence” gallery type.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Chunghun. Novella is the only theme that doesn’t allow the background image. Are you saying that prior to ASE 1.1, you could use a background image in the content component?

    Hi Gena.

    To alter the body or title font size, you may alter the appearance with custom CSS code. I recommend using a plugin like Simple Custom CSS to save your CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/).

    If you’re not familiar with how to use CSS inspector in Chrome, it’s super easy to use and will make finding the css classes that you’ll need when you want to change the design. Here’s a great in-depth article about this: https://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/developertools/part1/

    Hi Souena.

    Featured images don’t appear on pages as part of WordPress. You can read more about this topic as well as read some tips at https://wordpress.org/support/topic/add-a-featured-image-to-a-page-rather-than-post

    Instead of using the parallax component, use the image component instead. If the image does not appear how you like it, you can always adjust it with a little custom CSS.

    Hi Roy. After speaking with one of the developers, Novella does not allow you to use background images in components or change the content color in order to keep things uniform and beautiful throughout the theme.

    If you want, you can override this with CSS. You’ll just have to put an !important after the background image code.. then it will display. I recommend using a plugin like Simple Custom CSS to save your CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/).

    Hello again Boyce. Here is another idea for you.

    You can use this CSS code to remove the opacity on the image:

    body .aesop-component-invisible {opacity:1.0;}

    You should always put custom CSS in an external plugin. When an Aesop theme is updated, any CSS you add/edit in the core files will be erased, and we certainly don’t want that! 😉 Please use a plugin such as Simple Custom CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/) and add your custom CSS there instead.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Boyce. It appears that perhaps some sort of “lazy load” plugin is active. Do you have anything like that installed? Your site, however, does appear to load the images the same for me regardless of if it’s on my Mac or on an iPad. Are you not seeing it that way?

    Hi Christoph.

    It’s hard to tell from the screenshot. The height is based off of (1) the video height and width & (2) that ratio of #1 combined with the video width you entered for the video component. You can find more information about this at https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/video-component/ (look at the bottom of the page).

    Hi Kim.

    The first thing I see (on post https://www.beautifulordinary.com/pizza-pie/) is that you have a blockquote about mid-page and the blockquote contains the pizza dough video, the cooking rule, the pizzaria locale through the end of the page. I would recommend moving these items out of the blockquote. (If left in the blockquote, it’s causing a horizontal scrollbar on narrow screens.)

    If you haven’t uninstalled the beta yet, please do so. Aesop 1.1 is now live so you can just update from the normal non-beta Aesop installation. I’m curious if this may solve most of your issues.

    Hi Sophie.

    Yes Novella 1.0.5 is compatible with WordPress 4.0.

    If you are using an external plugin to save your CSS, then no, the Novella update will not overwrite your CSS code. The Novella update will only overwrite things in the /themes/novella/ folder.

    Hope that helps!

    Regarding Google Analytics, be sure you have done the two things mentioned in my post above. Hi Chris. Just wanted to let you know that we’ve updated Novella (1.0.5) to not display any options that cannot be set (ex: background color in content).

    I definitely understand that you’ve purchased Novella as a writer, not a developer. The designer of this theme decided to allow certain color changes but not others. I know that can be frustrating when you’re trying to make a compelling website.

    If you get stuck on any CSS changes that you’d like to make, just let me know and I will do my best to help.

    I do not believe there are any other options that have been removed from Novella. I will update the Novella product page to reflect that certain components’ background and text colors cannot be altered.

    Please let me know if I can help in any way.

    Hi Chris! Welcome to Aesop! 🙂 To address your questions:

    1. Novella doesn’t have a built-in option for a header logo, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Off the top of my head, I think the easiest way to do it would be to determine the CSS selector that styles the title and add a background image. However, I was just advised that due to the number of requests for a logo in Novella, we’ll be adding an option in, hopefully in the next update. I don’t have an ETA as of yet but it’s in the to-do list!

    2. In my opinion, the easiest way to hide things is with CSS. Just determine the selectors and give it a display: none; and it’ll disappear. 🙂

    Jenny @ Aesop
    Keymaster

    Hi Chris. Thanks for your post.

    Yes, you are correct. The designer of the Novella theme believes it is important to keep a uniform style throughout the theme and has limited color customizations.

    You can, however, change the link and accent colors at WPadmin –> Customize –> Novella options. You can also change these same attributes on a per-post basis. Simply scroll to the bottom of a post and you’ll see the options.

    In addition, you can overwrite anything you’d like by writing a little custom CSS code.

    I just added another fresh video component within Aesop, setting only the “vimeo” option and entering an ID (then inserting the component). Once again the Vimeo component is using the lowercase version “vimeo” and not “Vimeo”.

    Can you please try to insert a new Vimeo video doing just as I did above (selecting Vimeo and entering an ID only)? I am unable to reproduce what you’re describing. Also, please make sure your version of Aesop is 1.0.9.

    Hi Kim. You can find full documentation on the video component at https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/video-component/. You enter the width in the “Component Width” option. You can enter the size as a percent (like 40%) or pixels (like 500px). You can also enter the word “content” to restrict the width to that of the main text.

    If you’re self-hosting the video, be sure you have uploaded (and are using) the correct file. Check the video preview (like in the WP media gallery) to ensure it is the correct size.

    Hi Janet. You have a lot of topics here so I’ll try to address them one by one.

    Google Analytics: The code is appearing in your header as it should. You need to make sure your site is (1) registered AND verified with Google Analytics; (2) Registered and verified with Google Webmaster tools.

    Owner’s manual: You can download a copy at any time in your Aesop account (http://aesopstoryengine.com/account/).

    WP Side comments: The owner’s manual tells you exactly what you need to add to the WP Side comments plugin settings in order to get this working.

    Back-up plugin: We don’t offer a back-up plugin so I’m not sure what you’re referring to here.

    Social icons: Be sure Aesop Social is (1) activated; and (2) social links set in WP -> Appearance -> Customize -> Aesop Social. Next, be sure “enable front page header” is checked in Jorgen options at WP -> Appearance -> Customize -> Jorgen Options. The icons will appear on your home (grid) page.

    Hi Kim! So glad you’ve dove in to learn CSS coding. When you start to play around with it, CSS can be a lot of fun. 🙂

    Regarding the featured image, Aesop will use whatever size image you upload. The only stipulation to this is that WordPress limits the display size of all featured images to 1200px (I’m not sure why). I believe there are a few workarounds or hacks for this. Google searching “wordpress 1200px featured image” may be useful!

    To add to this, if you’d like to edit specifically the caption text color or the faded background of the caption area, you can do that with these two CSS selectors and attributes:

    body .aesop-parallax-sc-caption-wrap {
      color: #fff;
    }

    .aesop-parallax-sc-caption-wrap.bottom-right:before, .aesop-parallax-sc-caption-wrap.bottom-left:before {
      background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom,transparent 0,rgba(0,0,0,.8) 100%);
    }

    Hi Boris.

    You can alter the global link color and global accent color at WPadmin –> Appearance –> Customize –> Novella Options. You can also override these on a per-post basis – just scroll to the Novella options at the bottom of the post editor screen.

    Hope that helps!

    Using <p class="lead"> will do this: https://awesomescreenshot.com/0dc3eyne94 (click the screenshot to enlarge it).

    Using <p class="lead dropcap"> will do this: https://awesomescreenshot.com/0f33eyoj10 (once again, click to enlarge)

    To use either, just click the HTML tab in the post editor, find the P line and add the extra info. 🙂

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Cody.

    I visited your site on my Android device. The images are not appearing pixelated (which is good!) but your site is now not displaying properly on Android. Screenshots follow.

    Your site: https://i.imgur.com/20yyVln.png

    My site: https://i.imgur.com/BSK6JnM.jpg

    I’m not sure what you’ve done to alter this but my test site has no CSS changes whatsoever so it is all stock, out-of-the-box.

    If you make some changes, I’ll be happy to test them out. 🙂

    Regarding the text changing, be sure you are not putting any text directly following the shortcode.

    This is incorrect:

    [aesop-content]This is your text[/aesop-content]Don't put text here

    But this is okay:

    [aesop-content]This is your text[/aesop-content]

    Put text here

    Hi Janet. You should never ever edit core theme or plugin files as even the slightest error will lock you out of your site. What you will need to do is download a fresh copy of Jorgen, copy the functions.php file and paste it in the proper location (/wp-content/themes/jorgen/) via FTP overwriting the file that was edited.

    When writing PHP code to use with a theme, I recommend using a plugin like Code Snippets to save your PHP (https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/). Using this plugin, your PHP code will be safe and will not be overwritten with Aesop updates.

    Now as for targeting a certain line, you can do that with the CSS nth-child selector. Try something like this:

    .jorgen-cover-title .slabtext:nth-child(5) {
      color: #cf1d2b;
      text-shadow: 0px 0px 15px #000000;
    }

    (the 5 in parenthesis targets the 5th line)

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Janet.

    The reason I am asking for a screencapture/video is because I can go back and edit posts and everything is fine for me. So being able to see what happens first hand would be extremely helpful.

    The comments do work fine in Jorgen. Are you not seeing them on your site?

    Hi Janet.

    The number of stories that displays in the home page grid is determined by your WordPress settings. Just visit WPadmin –> Settings –> Reading –> “Blog pages show at most” and change the value to whatever you’d like.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Sophie.

    Yes, you are exactly correct. The Novella developer did not intend for the background color and text color options of the content component, quote component, etc, to do anything in Novella. I had added an enhancement request to our tracking system requesting that the options be removed from the editor (in Novella only) because it is misleading/confusing. The author’s intention with Novella was to create a breathtaking, uniformly styled theme where everything flows perfectly.

    If you want content components with different background colors, you can always write some custom CSS code. If you’re not familiar with how to use CSS inspector in Chrome, it’s super easy to use and will make finding the css classes that you’ll need when you want to change the design. Here’s a great in-depth article about this: https://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/developertools/part1/

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Sophie. I wanted to follow up on this after speaking with the developers.

    The text color and background color options are not supposed to alter anything in Novella. It is the designer’s intention to have a static color scheme throughout the theme (this is documented in your owner’s manual).

    If you wish to change the look, you may alter the link color and accent color via WPadmin –> Appearance –> Customize –> Novella Options. Aside from that, you may also change whatever you’d like by writing custom CSS code (just be sure to use a plugin for your CSS, like Simple Custom CSS available at wordpress.org).

    Hi Cody! Thanks for your patience while researching this a bit.

    After speaking with Nick, he believes it is some sort of bug that is specific to iOS devices and possibly retina related. This is quite a unique bug but we will get it fixed, rest assured. Keep an eye out for a Novella update. Reviewing the changelog before you update will mention if an iOS fix was added.

    I apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused. We’ll get it fixed up soon!

    Heya Cody!

    After some Google searching, it looks like the 1200px value is set by WordPress. I did find a post that shows you how to alter the featured image size. You can read more about it here: https://colorlib.com/wp/forums/topic/featured-image-not-resizing-past-1200px/. I hope that helps! You may also be able to find a WordPress plugin to add/edit featured image sizes as well at https://wordpress.org/plugins/.

    Unfortunately I don’t have any iOS devices to test on – all Android here. 🙂 I’ll see if Nick has access to one or see if I can figure something out and get back to you.

    Hi Cody. Thanks for your replies.

    Header Image:
    The header image comes from the featured image box in each post. WordPress generally associates posts and featured images in the database with some behind the scenes IDs. What I would recommend is editing the post, remove the featured image that’s there, then choose a new featured image, and publish the post. Both the grid image and the post image will pull from this featured image and adjust its size to fit as necessary. Let me know if that fixes the issue.

    Parallax Issue:
    This is how my emulator displays the first parallax image for iPad 3/4 on Safari: https://awesomescreenshot.com/08f3dmccbf I don’t see a Chrome on iPad option in my list but it’s still odd why you are seeing something different than I. Have you tried clearing your browser cache? Are you using a WordPress caching plugin?

    Hi Ryan. You have a few options here.

    1 – If you’re using a plugin that has a shortcode available, just place it within your post wherever you’d like it to appear (like with an Aesop Content component).

    2 – I’ve used a plugin called Social Sharing Toolkit. I know it has a center position option so perhaps try that plugin. https://wordpress.org/plugins/social-sharing-toolkit/

    If those don’t help, please let me know and we’ll figure something else out. 🙂

    My apologies Mark. I had forgotten that you added the social icons there on posts. Sorry about that!

    The reason the menu appears is because the page length is short. Short pages show the bar automatically because there’s not enough content. The easiest fix would be to add some more content to the page to lengthen it (whether it be blank paragraphs or something else).

    Please let me know if I can be of further help!

    Hi Janet. Would it be possible for you to create a short screencapture video of the issue so I can see what you’re doing exactly? You can use a free program called Jing to do this video (http://www.techsmith.com/download/jing/). When you’re done, simple choose the Share option and upload it to Screencast and provide me with the URL. Thanks!

    Hi Cody.

    First, you need to remove this bit of CSS from the theme file and put it in an external plugin like Simple Custom CSS. You should never edit core files as your changes will be overwritten on theme updates.

    .novella-entry .novella-entry-mast .novella-entry-mast-img:after {
        opacity: .6;
    }

    Second, while using the Chrome emulator for iOS (4/5), the images are appearing for me. Is it possible that a phone setting or perhaps a server outage was causing the images to not display?
