    Hi Mark.

    The reason this is happening is because the Devolution page is an actual page, not a post. The menu bar on Jorgen appears at the top of 1) home page grid; 2) pages. If you don’t want the bar, just use a post instead of a page.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks for your reply Janet. Would you mind disabling any plugins that are currently active (besides Aesop), and try to see if the issue continues?

    Bizarre behavior is usually due to faulty plugins. Hopefully I can help figure it out!

    Hi Janet. Thanks for the link!

    First, my apologies for my original reply. I thought you were referring to the comments section.

    Now that I’ve visited your site, I do see that the text is all together. When viewing the source code of your website, it looks like this is how you’ve typed it in WordPress. For example, between the black text and the blue text, there are no new paragraphs for line breaks. It is simply blue text after black text.

    I’m not sure what you’re trying to do here. If you want to put the blue text on a new line, simply use the “Visual” tab in WordPress and hit the enter key to put the quote in a new paragraph (and please do not take offense to this if you know how to do this; only trying to help!).

    If there’s something specific that you’re trying to do and it’s not working, please let me know what I should look at specifically and we’ll go from there. Also, if you can provide a screenshot of your post editor in the WordPress admin (of example text that doesn’t look right), that would help also!

    Hi Gregg!

    I’m assuming that you want to add a background effect to an entire post/story. If my assumption is wrong, please let me know what you’re wanting to do exactly.

    You can add a background image by writing some custom CSS code, like:

    /*** FOR THE POST BODY***/
    body .jorgen-entry-content {
      background: #FFFFFF; /*USE THIS TO CHANGE THE COLOR*/
      background-image: url('http://i.imgur.com/chDA7UY.png'); /*USE THIS TO ADD A BACKGROUND IMAGE*/
    }

    /*** FOR THE COMMENTS AREA***/
    body .jorgen-comments-wrap {
      background: #FFFFFF; /*USE THIS TO CHANGE THE COLOR*/
      background-image: url('http://i.imgur.com/chDA7UY.png'); /*USE THIS TO ADD A BACKGROUND IMAGE*/
    }

    /*** FOR THE PREVIOUS/NEXT STORY NAVIGATION***/
    body .jorgen-story-pager {
      background: #FFFFFF; /*USE THIS TO CHANGE THE COLOR*/
      background-image: url('http://i.imgur.com/chDA7UY.png'); /*USE THIS TO ADD A BACKGROUND IMAGE*/
    }

    You should always put custom CSS in an external plugin. When an Aesop theme is updated, any CSS you add/edit in the core files will be erased, and we certainly don’t want that! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Please use a plugin such as Simple Custom CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/) and add your custom CSS there instead.

    Hi Mark.

    I believe the issue with the Parallax images is because they are displayed via CSS rather than HTML. You’ll have to ask the author of the social plugin if it looks for images by using the img tag, or some other method. If it’s looking for the img HTML tag, it will never find that for the Parallax images as they are lines of CSS code. (The same logic applies to the Pinterest button).

    Regarding changing the color of the Parallax floater text, you just have to be specific enough and it won’t change the text everywhere. For example, this code will target the floater text of all Parallax components on your site and change the color to white:

    .aesop-parallax-sc .aesop-parallax-sc-floater {
      color:#FFFFFF;
    }

    Hi Cosmin.

    The issue you are describing was fixed in a previous Novella update. It looks like, for whatever reason, your theme did not update properly.

    Please visit your account at https://aesopstoryengine.com/account/ and download a fresh copy of Novella. Next, visit your WordPress admin, navigate to Appearance -> Themes and delete the Novella theme. Then install the new copy of Novella.

    I’m not sure why the update didn’t apply properly but please let me know if this solves your issue. Thanks!

    Hi Mark.

    Sure! You can add the social icons wherever you want using one of the Aesop hooks. If you visit this page, you’ll see what is available for Aesop Social: https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/aesop-social/. As for the hook locations for Jorgen, your owner’s manual will have that information (it’s available in your account at https://aesopstoryengine.com/account/).

    When writing PHP code to use with a theme, I recommend using a plugin like Code Snippets to save your PHP (https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/). Using this plugin, your PHP code will be safe and will not be overwritten with Aesop updates.

    Nick wrote up an awesome tutorial on filters too. You can check it out at https://aesopstoryengine.com/tutorials/using-aesop-filters/.

    Regarding the WWM Social Share, I did a little looking around the CSS. It looks like you have the setup as “top left” for positioning. The icons for the parallax image are at the very top of the page, though hidden. I’m guessing that WordPress interprets the image height to the top due to the parallax nature. Perhaps try a different setting other than “top left” to see if they show up somewhere. From there, you can tweak the location better with custom CSS.

    Regarding the floater text, that can be changed with custom CSS as well.

    Hi Nicola. I’m not really sure what you did here but using this code makes it work:

    [aesop_video width="640" align="center" src="youtube" id="bMZHdQqNVhU" loop="on" autoplay="on" controls="off" viewstart="off" viewend="off" caption="Hello Berlin!"]

    Notes:

    youtube needs to be all lowercase (it’s how the dropdown box selector outputs). I’m not sure if you typed this in manually?

    The “hosted” shortcode, which is “Video URL” in the options, should never be filled out if using a service such as YouTube. It is only used when self-hosting a video (instructions state “if self as source”).

    You should add some HTML in order to line them up right.

    Like…

    <div style="float: left;">
      all your twitter stuff here...
    </div>
    <div style="float: right;">
      all your facebook stuff here...
    </div>

    Granted you may need to tweak the margins/padding as well, which you can do inline after the float styles (like “float: right; padding: 10px;“)

    Hi Andy.

    It looks like the issue is related to have the grid gallery before the image component. The height of the grid gallery is calculated after the page loads so it’s throwing the image loading off by about the height of the grid gallery. To fix this, you have a couple options:

    1. Move the image above the grid gallery.
    2. Use custom CSS to make the image display at all times.

    If you choose option 2, here is the code you should use to make changes only for this specific post. I recommend using a plugin like Simple Custom CSS to save your CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/). Just add the following code to that plugin:

    #post-6 .aesop-component-invisible {
      opacity:100;
    }

    Hi Mark!

    What I would recommend is creating a child theme. There is information in your owner’s manual (available in your account) on how to do this.

    After you’ve created a child theme, visit the /themes/jorgen/ folder via FTP and copy comments.php to your child theme folder. You can then dig in and add whatever you want. It sounds like you would be better off creating a 2 column layout (using divs and floats) and then putting the Twitter code in one side and the Facebook code in the other.

    Hope that makes sense ๐Ÿ™‚

    If you want to add something before the comments, you can go by what I provided Nina above.

    Are you adding a gallery (via shortcode) or several parallax images? I’m not sure which post you’re looking at (because the demo doesn’t link properly) but most likely it’s a gallery. You’ll create a new gallery in the WPadmin left menu, select the parallax type, then add the shortcode to your post.

    Hi Kim. It’s no problem at all. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Using the Chrome inspector is actually pretty simple, especially if you check out the tutorial link I posted above.

    For example, using it, I can see that the red line you’re referring to is styled by:

    .kerouac-entry-top {
      border-bottom: 10px solid #aa3123;
    }

    You can change the line by copy/pasting that into the Simple Custom CSS plugin and changing the values as necessary. You will also need to add a “parent” CSS selector in front to say “hey, my code is more important than the theme’s code so use mine instead”. Usually adding “body” to the front works, like: body .kerouac-entry-top

    To access your account and download a fresh copy, simply visit https://aesopstoryengine.com/account/

    Hi Kim.

    You CAN access the style editor under the appearance tab, but you SHOULDN’T. As I stated previously, any changes you make to core files (i.e. editing in the appearance tab) will be overwritten on updates, plus it can also make your product stop working.

    What code have you placed in the Simple Custom CSS plugin? If you paste it here, I can take a look and see why it’s not working. Most likely it’s not working due to specificity, which means you have to make your code more of a priority over the theme’s code. For example, to have your styles apply to all single posts, you can add .single in front of your code (with a space after). For header items like the menu, you can add #header in front of your code (with a space after).

    If you paste your code here, I can help you get the rest of the way there and tell you why it’s not working. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi again Kim. First, you should never ever edit any core files. I highly recommend re-downloading the product and reinstalling asap. Any changes you make to core files will be overwritten on updates, plus it can also make your product stop working.

    Please use the method I mentioned above to add your CSS. The changes are most likely not taking effect because of the method you’re adding them.

    Hi Gregg.

    A couple things. First, make sure you don’t have a caching plugin active. If you do, the post dates will be cached. Second, did you republish the posts after you changed the dates?

    I took a look at your site (using the link you posted in your other thread about galleries) but I couldn’t find any posts with chapter navigation. Can you provide me with a link?

    A few things here. First, if you “view source” in FireFox, it shows all HTML errors in bold red text. It’s a great way to see if it’s HTML code messing up your site.

    Upon doing so, I was able to see that this text has a stray end span tag that is also creating a stray end div tag. Please view this text in HTML mode to ensure everything starts/ends properly:

    By day I&#8217;m also a web-graphic-mulimedia designer. Please visit my design business website: </span><strong>LauerCreative.com</strong> and don&#8217;t hesitate to contact me for design, video and web design questions or a free consultation on your project.<span style="color: #444444;">

    Next, can you edit the gallery post itself to ensure that the logo image is not included there?

    Also, if you have any plugins active that have anything to do with galleries, please disable those to see if it corrects the issue. In addition, be sure to disable any caching plugins that may be active.

    Let me know if this helps. Also feel free to post a screenshot here of the gallery post’s HTML as well as the story post’s HTML (where the gallery shortcode is inserted).

    Hi Kim. You can definitely alter the appearance with CSS. I recommend using a plugin like Simple Custom CSS to save your CSS (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/).

    If youโ€™re not familiar with how to use CSS inspector in Chrome, itโ€™s super easy to use and will make finding the css classes that youโ€™ll need when you want to change the design. Hereโ€™s a great in-depth article about this: https://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/developertools/part1/

    You should always put custom CSS in an external plugin. When an Aesop theme is updated, any CSS you add/edit in the core files will be erased, and we certainly don’t want that! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hope this helps!

    in reply to: Quote align="right" error #3467
    Jenny @ Aesop

    The first problem I see is that you have double quotes in your shortcode. Look at the quote text in:

    [aesop_quote width="content" background="#472023" text="#FFFFFF" align="right" size="3" parallax="off" direction="up" quote="โ€œRising up, back on the street. Did my time, took my chances. Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet. Just a man and his will to survive.โ€"]

    One quote after the other sort of cancels out the shortcode so that is the first thing I would try to fix this issue. All 3 of the quotes you pasted above have the double quotation issue at the beginning and end of each quote.

    Please let me know if changing these values solves your issue!

    Hi Joakim.

    I responded to one of your other posts regarding the mobile view. I’ve included a fix there that will solve all of your mobile issues.

    Using the same plugin I recommended on your other post, use the following CSS code to make the featured image span the width of the mobile site:

    #primary .kerouac-entry-top-img.kerouac-bg-img {
      background-size: contain !important;
      background-repeat: no-repeat !important;
    }

    Regarding the map photo, once you add the CSS code I provided on the other post, it will remove the same padding as the text. If you want the map larger (like full width), then insert an image component using 100% width (http://aesopstoryengine.com/help/image-component/).

    For the larger photos with the grey boxes, you can try using:

    #primary .os-ios .aesop-stacked-img {
      background-size: contain;
    }

    Please realize that no mobile website will ever look the same as the desktop version. In fact, many companies have a completely different mobile version. If you’re trying to get your mobile and desktop sites to match as much as possible, I would recommend reading that article I supplied in the other thread. This will teach you how to use the Chrome inspector to change these things using CSS (as I’ve provided you examples). I can’t design your site for you but I can help point you in the right direction and provide you with tools to help you succeed.

    It is understandable that the portrait and landscape versions do not display similarly. Oftentimes sizes of images, text, etc, use padding and margins to keep the components responsive. If these attributes are removed, you’ll lose the responsiveness. You will need to decide if it’s more important for you to have a responsive mobile site, or if you want the desktop and mobile sites to look exact alike (which is nearly impossible).

    Hi Joakim. Because of the 50% width, and also because each component has padding/margins, the text on mobile is taking up less than 50% of the space. The easiest way to solve this is with CSS.

    The content component has an inner left & right padding of 3rem. If those values are changed to 0, the content is now 50%.

    Once you’ve installed Simple Custom CSS (link above), add the following CSS to change the left and right padding to 0:

    #primary .aesop-content-comp-inner {
      padding-left: 0;
      padding-right: 0;
    }

    This will make the content appear at 50% without having to change your content width to something larger.

    Hi Nina. I understand exactly what you’re saying and I’ve got an idea, but first I wanted to mention that Aesop Social also does Google+ as well as Google Analytics. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Now, what you can do is use a PHP hook to have social icons appear above the Jorgen comments using the jorgen_before_comments hook.

    To add social icons in Jorgen above the comments, you can use the following code (you’ll need to find the correct sharing code from the social media sites, as well as images, but this is the basic way):

    add_action('jorgen_before_comments', 'jorgen_before_comments');
    function jorgen_before_comments() {
      <?php
        echo '<div class="ninas-jorgen-social">
                <a href="#" class="ninas-twitter-share"><img src="#linktoyourimage"></a>
                <a href="#" class="ninas-fb-share"><img src="#linktoyourimage"></a>
                <a href="#" class="ninas-google-share"><img src="#linktoyourimage"></a>
              </div>';
      ?>
    }

    You can put anything within the div really. And then tweak the CSS styling to your liking (like you’d need to create styles for ninas-jorgen-social, ninas-twitter-share, etc).

    Alternatively, if this overwhelms you, I have tested a plugin called Social Sharing Toolkit that does work fine in Aesop (https://wordpress.org/plugins/social-sharing-toolkit/). You just have to set it up before anything will appear on your site.

    Hope this helps!

    ***This reply is regarding the menu text color (on hover) only***

    To alter the appearance of the menu hover text with CSS, you can use something like:

    #header .kerouac-header-right ul li a:hover {
        color: #000000;
    }

    ***This reply is regarding the quotes only***

    Regarding the quote issues, I looked at the two published posts on your site and I don’t see anywhere that the Aesop Quote component is being used. I do see that you have some text that you have included in quotation marks, such as:

    โ€œMengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was
    trouble.
    But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is
    dangerous.

    The HTML for that section is:

    <p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>"Mengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was trouble.
    But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is dangerous.</strong></em></p>

    The reason the text is wrapping and including only 1 word on another line is because of your content width. If you want things to be cohesive and flow better, I would recommend using the actual Aesop Quote component or changing the layout. Right now, you have the sentence starting with “But the president” on a new line (this is why it’s wrapping). I would recommend backspacing to have that sentence start immediately after “was trouble”, like:

    <p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>"Mengestu [military dictator in Ethiopia during the Durg Regime until 1991] was trouble. But the president of Eritrea is double trouble. It is bad in Eritrea now. It is dangerous.</strong></em></p>

    If you wish to break mid-line, just add <br /> HTML tags where the new line(s) should start.

    ***This reply is regarding the galleries only***

    After looking everything over, it looks like you’re creating WordPress galleries incorrectly. I’m not sure how you’re doing it exactly, but here are the steps on how to create a WordPress gallery the correct way. I’ve also made a video for your convenience which you may view at https://screencast.com/t/XsoCQOtGE

        Visit WPadmin → Galleries → New Gallery
        Click the Add Media button
        Click the Create Gallery option
        Insert gallery into editor, and publish.
        Upload new images or select multiple images from the Media Libary tab then click Create a new gallery
        Choose a Type from the dropdown box then click Insert gallery
        Give the gallery post a title then click Publish

    Next, you can copy the Aesop gallery shortcode from within the post (listed under Gallery Instructions beneath the Publish button) or from WPadmin → Galleries. Paste the Aesop gallery shortcode into the post you want to display the gallery and publish the post.

    On your site, I’ve edited your draft post titled “Gallery” and have made titles for everything so you can see how each type looks. Please look over your “Gallery” post when you get a moment.

    Hi Marc-Andre. Nice to hear from you again!

    The reason your site isn’t showing the menu is because you have your homepage set to be a post. If you use the Jorgen grid as your homepage (instead of the post you specified), AND have checked the box to โ€œEnable Front Page Headerโ€, the menu icon will show on the top right.

    Alternatively, pages will show a menu icon (example: https://playground.aesopstories.com/sample-page/) but posts do not.

    Hi Nina. Thanks for contacting us!

    If you use the Aesop Social add-on, it will add Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ icons to Aesop themes (like Jorgen). It also includes other key features to make your site more social media friendly by making it easier to share your content on the web. You can check out Aesop Social at https://aesopstoryengine.com/library/aesop-social/.

    If you don’t like where the theme displays the icons, you also have the option to include the icons wherever you want by using a PHP hook (it’s much easier than it sounds!). More information on this is available at https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/aesop-social/.

    We are also planning to create a shortcode for Aesop Social which will make it even easier to add the icons from Aesop Social. We don’t have an ETA for this but it is planned.

    As I stated in one of my other replies, I am assuming that you have a plugin conflict on your site where a plugin was not properly coded and is interfering with Aesop. Several times I have seen a plugin completely mess up a site and once it’s deactivated, the issues go away. One thing you can try is deactivating ALL plugins (except Aesop) and then refresh your site to see if the problem remains.

    Note: I see you have a caching plugin installed and activate. I highly recommend disabling this plugin until we are completely finished diagnosing these problems. Caching plugins make it nearly impossible to debug because you never know if you’re looking at a live page or a cached version. As part of the deactivating process, be sure you clear the cache from the plugin otherwise a cached version will be served.

    I definitely don’t want you settling for using a third party plugin – the Aesop galleries do work great! We just have to figure out why they aren’t displaying on your site.

    The text ultimately takes up less than 40% due to padding/margins, but if you change it to something like 80%, you’ll see how much of a difference it makes. The narrow widths get quite small due to the padding/margins.

    I just checked https://venturepress.dk/ethiopia/ on an iPhone5 and everything looks great minus the small content width that’s set (40%). I don’t see any italics, justified text, text changing in the middle of a chapter, etc. Did you change something?

    The site is displaying narrow on iPhone because it is set to display narrow on a normal pageview (looks like you have it set to 40%). After allocating for mobile browsers, the 40% width on an iPhone looks smaller, even though it’s about the same as on a regular pageview.

    On the page you linked, I don’t see anything displaying in italics, but the text in the grey box is different (margins, etc) because it’s a caption, not text/content.

    The text with the extra spacing is actually justified. The difference between that paragraph and the one at the top is that the top paragraph is actually in < p > tags whereas the next is not in < p > tags. I recommend taking a look at the section of text in the HTML editor on the post (text starts with “with it’s significant range in altitude”).

    I can’t find the text you’re referring to. Looks like it’s been changed. Let me know what’s a better text to look at and I’ll definitely do it. Thanks.

    Hi Joakim. Thanks for your reply.

    If you viewed my site recently, I did not have the Kerouac theme active, in fact it wasn’t an Aesop theme at all (we were doing testing). I have reactivated Kerouac on my test site and have viewed a post. I have checked things you mentioned (text style, spacing, margins, etc) and everything looks fine on my end. Please view a test post at https://aesop.simplemama.com/hurts-so-good/ and see if the issues still exist for you. It sounds like you may have some kind of conflict on your site maybe from another plugin. If you can provide me with a sample URL that isn’t displaying correctly, I can take a deeper look and help diagnose the problems better.

    To address some of the other points:

    You can change the background color of the menu area in WPadmin -> Appearance -> Customize -> Kerouac. It is “Accent Color Two”. There are several other options here as well.

    I don’t know what the “white box” is that you’re referring to but I’m assuming this is a plugin conflict (like I mentioned above).

    Aesop is designed to tell stories, so we don’t do certain things like having dropdown / child menus. We’re more focused on the storytelling aspect. If you wish to use dropdown menus, there are several menu plugins available on WordPress that can add this functionality for you.

    Regarding the name and tagline displaying on the “top of a website”, are you referring to inside the actual web page or on the browser tab?

    The comments are called with the theme name to prevent conflicts with other WordPress plugins and themes. For example, having the class named jorgen-comments is much less likely to cause a conflict with another plugin/theme than one named just comments. Namespacing and specificity are extremely important with properly coding CSS.

    Okay it looks like there was a small bug in the code so we’ll get this fixed in the next update.

    Find Line 15:

    wp_enqueue_style('andersen-style', get_stylesheet_directory_uri().'/assets/css/style.css', 1.0, true);

    Hmmm.. well generally speaking you should be able to copy the comments file from the theme directory into your child theme directory. Then you can edit the child theme comments file without worrying about it being overwritten on theme update. Within the file, you can change the #jorgen-comments to comments.

    I have not tested this personally but theoretically that’s how it should work.

    Please let me know if you run in to any issues!

    Unfortunately there is really no easy way to do this other than using offsets. We recommend try using multiples of 100 to find the right offset, and generally speaking, starting with -200 is a good place to start. The further down the page, the greater the offset needed. Check out https://aesopstoryengine.com/help/parallax-component/ for further information on using the offset.

    The good news is that in 1.1, the offset will be auto-calculated making things much easier!
